What the Future of Dentistry may hold

The future of dentistry may look very different than the practice of today.

Technological advances that are transforming every aspect of our world are also impacting dentistry in a multitude of ways, from prevention methods, diagnostic tools, and treatment options. Here’s a glimpse into the near and long-term possibilities of dental care:

         Prevention

A myriad of dental care innovations focuses on prevention. Manufacturers are designing toothbrushes with cameras and location tracking technology that show you parts of your mouth you’re not brushing enough, pressure sensors that warn if you’re brushing too hard, timers that track how long you brush and apps that allow you to monitor your oral care.

Other innovators are attempting to create sensors that could detect various diseases from saliva or mouth tissue, could monitor heart rate, detect blood alcohol levels—or sense bad breath. For example, a mouthpiece outfitted with a pH sensor could detect acidic saliva—a risk factor for tooth decay and gum disease.

         Diagnosis

The potential for dentists to provide more precise diagnosis and treatment will improve in the near future. Genome data could allow dental professionals to pinpoint an individual’s susceptibility to various types of oral disease. Dentists could tailor treatment to a patient’s genetics, making choices based on what is most effective for particular physiology. Treatment could even be based on the specific bacteria that are causing an oral health problem.

Diagnostic tools, like the “S-Ray,” may become available. This technology ultrasonically maps teeth and gums in 3-D to find cavities and disease. Upon approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, experts think s-rays may be cheaper than x-rays. Furthermore, it doesn’t expose patients to radiation.

         Treatment

Lasers are currently used by dental professionals in both diagnosis and treatment. Dentists use “soft tissue lasers” for minor gum surgery. In the future, “Hard-tissue lasers” could ultimately replace whining dental drills, removing tooth decay with the aid of tiny, digitally-controlled mirrors.

New breakthroughs are creating “biomaterials” to fill cavities. Harvard and the University of Nottingham have created a synthetic biomaterial that could allow a cavity to heal itself.

The future of dentistry could include nanobots that might restore or straighten teeth, deliver anesthesia during oral surgery, diagnose diabetes and other diseases, or treat oral cancer. Others may fight bacteria with products like “wearable toothpaste” made of antimicrobial carbon nanotubes.

Even with the most futuristic oral care, teeth will occasionally need to be replaced with a cap, crown or a bridge. Current technology uses Computer-Assisted Design/Computer-Assisted Manufacture (CAD/CAM) to mill a tooth from a 3-D scan. 3-D printing of crowns is becoming more common, and some researchers are working with recipes that could add tooth decay-fighting chemicals to 3-D printed teeth.

At Town & Country Dental, we are committed to staying on top of the latest technological developments in dental care. We are here to care for your teeth today, tomorrow and into the future.

         Dental Naughty and Nice List

The holiday season is filled with celebrations and indulgences, many of which involve eating and drinking. Not surprisingly, the holidays can take a toll on your oral health. Check out Santa’s list of naughty and nice dental behavior:

         Naughty

          Loading up on sweets

         – From holiday cookie exchanges to grandma’s sticky toffee pudding, the flavor of the season is sugar! While it’s fine to indulge and enjoy the festivities, avoid the temptation to graze on sweets all day long. Sweet drinks like eggnog, mulled cider and holiday punch can be even worse for your teeth because they bathe the entire mouth in sugar.

           Disrupting your dental routine

          – Many people feel rushed during the holidays, and normal schedules are disrupted. Whether it’s a string of late-night parties or a visit to Grandma, make an effort to maintain your oral care routine and check that your children are also brushing and flossing regularly. Don’t forget to keep using dental devices such as retainers and mouth guards.

Using your teeth to cut ribbons, open packages

          – Resist the temptation to pry open packages or sever strings and ribbons with your teeth. This can result in chipped teeth and cracked enamel. Reach for scissors or other appropriate tools instead.

           Ignoring a dental issue

          – If your schedule is packed with family gatherings, parties, shopping and travel plans, it’s tempting to ignore dental issues. However, that sore tooth or loose filling could turn into a major problem if left untreated.

         Nice

Sipping on water between sugary snacks

         – If you are going to enjoy the holiday sweets and treats, be sure to sip on water to rinse off as much sugar as possible. Staying hydrated is also an excellent way to maintain overall health as well as oral health.

Opting for the veggie and cheese selection at holiday parties

          – Snacking on raw veggies as celery and carrots will help clean your teeth between sugary snacks. Hard cheeses will also stimulate saliva production and rinse bacteria from tooth surfaces.

Packing a disposable or travel toothbrush

          – Even if you’re not traveling during the holidays, carrying a disposable toothbrush and mouth rinse is a great way to freshen your mouth and reduce plaque between parties and events. If you can’t brush, then sugar-free gum can help cleanse teeth and neutralize the acids released by the bacteria in plaque.

           Scheduling a year-end cleaning

          – If you have insurance dollars left over, schedule a cleaning or other service before the end of the year. If you have a more serious problem or persistent pain, call your dental care professional as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

All of us at Town and Country Dental wish you the happiest and healthiest of holidays this year!

Causes and Treatment for Bruxism

Do you clench or grind your teeth daily?

Many people grind or clench their teeth on occasion without any ill effects. The medical term for teeth grinding is called bruxism, and when it occurs on a regular basis, teeth can be damaged, and other oral health complications can arise. Here are some symptoms of bruxism:

           Sensitive teeth

Fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth.

           Jaw pain and stiffness

           TMD/TMJ

           Enlarged jaw muscles

Clicking or popping of jaw joints

           Headaches

           Earache

         Causes

Dental professionals have identified a range of physical and psychological causes that can lead to bruxism.

           Stress, anger or anxiety

can lead to clenching and grinding, often during sleep. Some people are not even aware that they are grinding their teeth until a loved one informs them of the noise they are making at night. Managing stress levels, utilizing relaxation techniques or exercise may help with stress relief.

           Bite and alignment issues

are another common cause of bruxism. Missing or crooked teeth or an abnormal bite can cause irritation, which may trigger grinding. Speak to your dentist to determine the best treatment.

           Sleep issues

such as sleep apnea or snoring affect nighttime breathing and are primary causes of bruxism. Sleep issues have also been linked to major health complications so speak to a medical professional to address the matter.

           Medications

, including certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, and amphetamines have been linked to bruxism.

           Neurological conditions

such as Huntington’s disease or Parkinson’s disease may also contribute to teeth grinding and clenching.

         Treatment

There is no simple cure for bruxism, but managing the underlying cause and relieving symptoms is the general approach that most medical and dental professionals recommend. Whenever feasible, lifestyle choices and behavior patterns should be examined for areas where improvements can be made. These include:

Getting enough exercise and sleep regularly

Relaxation and stress management techniques before bed. Use a warm washcloth or a heating pad to relax the jaw muscles which may ease tension as well.

         Avoiding excessive caffeine or alcohol

Avoiding chewing gum because it can embed clenching into the muscle memory

In conjunction with behavioral improvements, devices can be utilized at night to protect the teeth. These devices are called by many names, including occlusal guard, dental guard, night guard or bite splint. The American Academy of Oral Medicine recommends a plastic mouth guard that covers the teeth in either the upper or the lower arch. Although stock type dental guards are available at drug stores, many people find them to be too bulky or ill-fitting. A custom night guard may be a better option to ensure a better fit and more regular use.

Are you tired of filing your own dental insurance?

Whether you are looking into dental insurance plans offered through your employer or an individual dental insurance plan, things can get quite confusing. Not only are there different types of plans such as Premier, PPO, HMO and so on, but there are countless details to remember; waiting periods for dental work, frequency limitations for x-rays, deductibles, copays and much more. Once you have selected your plan and begin receiving services, some dental providers require that you file your claims. At Town & Country Dental, we want to be sure that our patients understand the types of available dental insurance plans as well as the process for filing claims. Here are some of the differences between commonly offered DPPO’s and DHMO’s:

         DPPO Dental Preferred Provider Organization

Coverage whether you visit an in-network or out-of-network dentist; however, costs are typically lower with an in-network provider.

Annual deductible which varies by insurance company and by the plan.

The annual maximum which varies by insurance company and by the plan.

Premiums for a DPPO tend to be more expensive than a DHMO.

         DHMO Dental Health Maintenance Organization

Must select an in-network primary care dentist for covered services.

Copayment at the time you receive covered services.

           No deductibles

           No annual maximums

Your decision regarding which plan to select should take into consideration the type of dental care your family will need, your financial situation and the available dental providers in your area.

Keep Us Updated If Your Insurance Changes!

If you have signed up for a new plan, switched insurance plans or received new information about your existing dental benefits, please contact us before your next appointment. Many patients assume that their insurance company will contact their dental provider, but this is not necessarily the case. It is the patient’s responsibility to provide updated information to avoid any unwanted surprises, uncovered procedures or unexpected out of pocket costs.

         We Handle the Claim Submission

Many dental providers require full payment at the time of service, and the patient is responsible for filing claims with their insurance company and pursuing reimbursements. To alleviate this stress, we submit dental insurance claims as a service to our patients. After your visit at Town & Country Dental, our experienced office staff will document the specific procedures performed and electronically submit necessary forms and reports to your insurance company as a dental claim. After filing, you will receive an invoice for any remaining charges or amounts not covered.

Maintaining your Dental Health Care is Important following a Disaster

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, many Houstonians’ lives have been completely upended. Countless families are dealing with lost possessions, damaged homes, and temporary housing situations. While we understand that dental care may be the furthest thing from your mind right now, we’d like to offer some tips and helpful advice to maintain your dental health if your family is dealing with the stress of recovery and rebuilding after the recent disaster. During times of stress, the body is more susceptible to illness and infection, and dental health is no different. Here are some things to watch out for:

Gum disease or worsening of existing gum disease --

Stress can depress your immune system and in turn, can cause further damage to your gums. Get professional attention before the condition progresses.

Canker sores or cold sores --

One of the primary causes for mouth sores is emotional stress. Avoid acidic foods and toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate. Use an over-the-counter product for pain.

          T

eeth grinding and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) --

Stress can cause you to grind your teeth in your sleep. If you have headaches when you wake up, you may be grinding your teeth at night. Stress can also cause you to clench your teeth during the day unconsciously. Practice relaxation techniques and consider a mouth guard.

           Poor oral hygiene —

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with too much to do, you may feel that there isn’t time to brush your teeth or floss regularly. Make every effort to return to your brushing and flossing regimen and check that all family members are brushing and flossing as well.

           Poor diet/nutrition --

Living in an unfamiliar place, or not having access to your kitchen and stress eating can result in a poor diet lacking in the vitamins and nutrients that you need to stay healthy. You may also be tempted to substitute meals with sugary snacks which can lead to tooth decay.

In addition to stress-related issues, there may be other symptoms to observe and treat, if necessary. If you have any of the following symptoms, make time to see your dental professional before the problem becomes worse:

           Mouth pain –

Oral pain, swelling or bleeding, could signal an issue. Visit a dentist as soon as possible. And for severe dental or facial pain or swelling, seek immediate medical attention.

Temporary crowns or bridges – Have your crowns and bridges checked within a month after placement. If you had a temporary crown or bridge placed just before Hurricane Harvey, contact us to have your restoration checked. It’s also important to avoid eating hard or sticky foods with your temporary crown or bridge.

           Lost appliances –

During the height of the flooding, many people had to leave their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. If your family lost items such as night guards for bruxism or custom fitted sports mouth guards, don’t delay in replacing these necessary dental appliances.

As Houston continues on the road to recovery, please remember that it is important to maintain your health and the health of your family. Returning to your regular regimen of daily oral care and routine checkups can ensure that small problems don’t become emergencies. At Town and Country Dental, we are committed to helping our patients in any way we can as our city rebuilds.

The Importance of Mouth Guards for Student Athletes

With a new school year comes the start of fall sports for many student athletes from elementary school up to college. Approximately one-third of all dental injuries are sports-related, so it is vital that athletes wear a mouth guard for sports that involve falls, body contact or flying equipment. Mouth guards typically cover the upper teeth and protect the soft tissues of your tongue, lips and cheek lining. If you wear braces or other fixed dental appliances on your lower jaw, your dentist may suggest a mouth protector for lower teeth as well. A properly fitted mouth guard will help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth, a fractured jaw and injuries to the lips, tongue or face. Some studies have indicated that mouth guards can even reduce concussion risk because they help absorb shock, stabilize the head and neck, and limit movement caused by a direct hit to the jaw. No matter which type of mouth guard you choose, it should be resilient, tear-resistant and comfortable. It should also fit properly and not restrict your speech or breathing. Mouth guard thickness also has been shown to be a factor that contributes to the level of protection. There are several to choose from:

             Custom-made mouth guards

are individually designed and made in your dentist’s office or a professional dental laboratory. They are likely to provide the most comfortable fit and best protection. Your dentist makes an impression of your teeth and then constructs the mouth guard over a model of them.

             Boil and bite mouth guards

come in a pre-formed shape that can be altered by boiling the mouth guard in water, then biting into the warm plastic for a customized fit. They can be purchased at many sporting goods stores.

             Stock mouth guards

are inexpensive and come pre-formed, ready to wear. Unfortunately, they often don’t fit very well. They can be bulky and may make talking and breathing difficult.

             Mouthguards for braces

            – A properly fitted mouth guard may be especially important for people who wear braces or have fixed bridge work. A blow to the face could damage the brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances.

Between uses, it’s important to keep your mouth guard clean and dry. Here are some tips for making sure your mouth guard is always ready to go:

Rinse before and after each use or brush with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Regularly clean the mouth guard in cool, soapy water and rinse thoroughly.

Store and transport the mouth guard in a sturdy container that has vents so it can dry and keep bacteria from growing.

Never leave the mouth guard in the sun or hot water.

Store your mouth guard where your pet cannot get to it. Many pets find mouth guards to be irresistible toys.

Mouth guards should be replaced after each season because they can wear down, making them less useful. Replace your mouth guard immediately if it shows sign of wear, is damaged or ill fitting.

In the event of a mouth injury, please call us immediately so that we can help. Immediate care can help save permanent teeth. Town and Country Dental is here to help with all of your family’s dental care needs and we accept almost all PPO’s.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gaining a better understanding of gum disease is important and can save you from future dental expenses

Healthy, white teeth may be the stars of the show, but your gums are the best supporting actors of oral health. Gums, clinically called gingiva, keep bacteria out, provide a seal around your teeth, and anchor them securely in place. Without the strength and cushioning gums provide, your teeth wouldn’t be able to withstand the pressure of chewing or biting. A good dental routine not only keeps your teeth strong, but it also keeps your gums healthy. Just as teeth can be damaged from improper hygiene, gums are also susceptible to the effects of plaque and tartar. Gum disease appears in the following forms:

         Gingivitis

Our mouths are full of bacteria which form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can harden and form tartar that only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove. The longer plaque and tartar remain on teeth, the more harmful they become. The bacteria causes gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. In gingivitis, the gums may become red or swollen and can bleed easily. Gingivitis can usually be reversed with daily brushing and flossing, and regular professional cleaning.

         Periodontitis

Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. Over time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and trigger a chronic inflammatory response. The tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. The gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen, and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed. Periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults older than 35.

It is possible to have gum disease and have no warning signs. That is one reason why regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations are essential. Your dental professional will use a periodontal probe to check for and measure any pockets. In a healthy mouth, the depth of these pockets is usually between 1 and 3 millimeters. X-rays may also be taken to determine if there is any bone loss. If you are diagnosed with gum disease, your dental professional will recommend treatment methods that can range from deep cleaning to surgery depending upon how far the condition has progressed. The primary goal is to stop the spread of infection and reduce further damage.

Good dental care at home is essential to help keep periodontal disease from becoming more serious or recurring. Brush properly by directing the bristles into the gum line to prevent plaque buildup. Floss regularly, eat a balanced diet, refrain from smoking and schedule regular dental visits to keep your teeth and gums in great shape.

Tips to Maintain your Dental Health Throughout the Summer

Summer is officially here! For many families, this means kids home from school, visitors, vacations, and a different daily schedule. Don’t let your family’s teeth suffer from the change in routine. Here are some tips to maintain your dental health during the dog days of summer:

         Restock on Dental Supplies:

The start of summer is the perfect time to buy new toothbrushes, replace empty boxes of floss and stock up on toothpaste. If your summer plans include travel, stock up on trial sizes that are quick and easy to pack. The American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes every three to four months.

         Hydrate:

The summer heat and increased activity level demand an increase in your fluid intake. Keep your mouth moist by drinking water throughout the day to wash away plaque-causing bacteria. Limit intake of soft drinks and sports drinks that can wear away the enamel. Lemonade, that beloved summer staple, is highly acidic and should be consumed sparingly. Rinsing the mouth out with water will wash away the acid and sugar before too much damage is done.

         Avoid Summer Dental Dangers:

Don’t chew ice – As refreshing as a cool, icy drink is, resist the temptation to crunch the ice. Excessive ice-chewing can result in cracked and chipped teeth, damage to tooth enamel and problems with existing fillings and crowns. It can also become a habit which is hard to break.

Follow the “pool rules” – According to the Academy of General Dentistry, many summer dental injuries are due to a pool accident. Running on slippery pool decks, diving into shallow waters or bumping the pool ledge causes many children to either chip or knock a tooth loose. If a tooth is knocked out, keep it hydrated in water or milk and call your dentist immediately.

         Keep your routine:

It’s easy to get off your routine during the summer. A more relaxed schedule, travel, sleepovers or summer camp are just a few things that can disrupt daily oral care. Although it’s not catastrophic to miss the occasional brushing, you don’t want your family to end the summer with a mouthful of unwanted cavities so be vigilant about maintaining a dental routine. Put together some dental travel kits for unexpected nights away from home. The kit should contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, bottled water, floss and a pack of sugar-free gum.

         Travel tips:

If your summer plans include travel, be sure to take your dental insurance information, your dentist’s contact information and any dental devices, products or medications your family needs.

         Beat the crowd:

Even if you don’t have kids, scheduling a dental appointment in the summer is more convenient because you can avoid the back to school rush that happens every August.

         Your Complete Guide to Toothpaste

A trip down the oral care aisle of the supermarket presents a dizzying array of toothpaste selections but do you know the differences between all of the different options? Or, like many of us, do you make your choice based on slick packaging and marketing buzzwords? No matter what type of toothpaste you select, the first thing to look for is the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The American Dental Association conducts both clinical and laboratory studies before any toothpaste receives the seal of acceptance for safety and effectiveness. All ADA approved toothpaste will contain fluoride. Here is a breakdown of the types of toothpaste available in most stores:

         Children’s Toothpaste

In 2014, the ADA issued guidelines stating that caregivers should begin brushing their children’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first teeth erupt. However, baby teeth don’t require the same intensity of cleaning that adult teeth do, and can be damaged by harsh products. Children’s toothpaste contains less fluoride or abrasive agents as well as less intense flavoring.

         Tartar Control Toothpaste

Tartar control toothpaste can’t dissolve tartar that has already bonded with the enamel, but it can stop future deposits from forming. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate is the active ingredient in most tartar control toothpaste. Those who are prone to canker sores might want to avoid toothpaste with high levels of sodium-based compounds, as they may aggravate the condition.

         Sensitivity Toothpaste

Toothpaste which target sensitivity typically contain one of the following active ingredients: potassium nitrate, stannous fluoride or strontium chloride. While they offer relief for people with sensitive teeth, it can take 3-4 weeks to experience full benefits. In the meantime, a visit to the dentist may help address the cause of tooth sensitivity.

         Whitening Toothpaste

Everyone wants a laser white smile, and the oral health care market is saturated with multiple products that promise a brighter smile. Whitening toothpaste contains soft abrasive agents who “scrub” the stains off your teeth. Some also contain peroxide to bleach the surface of teeth to a lighter shade.

         Strengthening Toothpaste

Toothpaste labeled as strengthening refers to strengthening enamel. In general, this means that the toothpaste contains fluoride. Strengthening products will typically be less abrasive to reduce the wear on tooth enamel.

         Natural Toothpaste

Many people want to avoid the detergents, chemicals, and artificial sweeteners contained in commercial toothpaste. Natural toothpaste claims not to contain these ingredients. Be sure to confirm that the natural toothpaste you select is ADA approved and contains fluoride.

         Prescription Toothpaste

For patients at higher risk for cavities, prescription strength toothpaste may be recommended by your dentist. This toothpaste typically contains a higher concentration of fluoride which is the main ingredient to help fight the decay-causing bacteria.

The Tale of the Tooth Fairy

         Your Complete Guide to Toothpaste

Although many countries around the world have unique traditions to mark the loss of a child’s baby teeth, the tooth fairy is an American creation which is quite recent compared to other beloved holiday characters. The first known reference to the tooth fairy was in a 1908 “Household Hints” item in the Chicago Daily Tribune where it was suggested that children might be less reluctant to remove wiggly teeth if they knew the tooth fairy would visit at night and exchange it for a gift.

         Cold cash or creativity?

The 2017 going rate for baby teeth is all over the board with some parents paying a dollar, five dollars, or whatever they happen to have in their wallets when they suddenly realize that something needs to go under the pillow, and fast! More recently, the emphasis has turned away from the amount of money to the creative presentation and fanfare of the event.

For the creatively competitive parent, it is no longer sufficient to wrap Junior’s bicuspid in a square of tissue and slide it under the pillow. There are miniature “fairy doors” that can be installed to allow magical entry to the child’s room. Then, you must decide among the myriad of storage options now available to cradle the precious cargo until it is retrieved. Choose from a range of personalized pillows, boxes, tins, door hangers or pouches that can be purchased or made. Once the fairy door has been installed and the receptacle has been selected, you must decide the method and amount of payment. Here are some creative ideas:

             Gold Sacagawea coins

            – a single dollar or two carries much more weight when it’s a shiny gold coin.

             Two dollar bill

            – a rarely seen novelty, the two dollar bill is a fun alternative to the ho-hum bills that everyone else receives.

             Origami

            – If you are the dexterous type, try folding a one or five-dollar bill into any number of fun shapes.

             Fairy dust

            – Glitter from the craft store can be sprinkled on and around the money, the window sill, the fairy door or other places the tooth fairy may have alighted. Some parents even put teeny tiny footprints in the glitter!

             Miniature letter

            – If you have excellent penmanship, a magnifying glass and a very small piece of paper, you can craft a minuscule personalized letter from the tooth fairy to go with the money.

             Receipt

            – Proof of the transaction can be printed as a receipt which details the date, amount paid and conditions of the sale.

             Report card

            – What better way to encourage proper oral hygiene than to leave a fairy-sized report card on the condition of the tooth?

             Chocolate coins

            – A bit counter to the oral hygiene message, but who doesn’t love gold chocolate coins?

             Foreign money

            – Since the tooth fairy visits children all over the world, sometimes she gets the money mixed up and may leave a stash of coins from a far off land.

             Proof positive

            – Amaze your child with proof that the tooth fairy came to visit! Apps such as

               Catchacharacter

It is an integral part of your oral care, but did you know that dental floss has other amazing uses as well? Not only is it strong and versatile, but it’s inexpensive and comes in a handy, portable package that’s perfect for stashing in your bag or around the home. Here are some ways to use dental floss that have nothing to do with your teeth:

         In the Kitchen

Unflavored dental floss is actually the tool of choice for many chefs when it comes to cutting soft cheeses, cakes or hard boiled eggs. It can also be used to separate warm cookies from baking sheets and loosen dough from counter surfaces.

         Separate Stuck-Together Photos

Don’t risk your precious memories by pulling apart photos that are stuck together or adhered to album pages. Use the floss to gently separate the photos from each other or to lift them off the sticky backing of album pages.

         Fire Starter

Waxed dental floss burns so you can wrap it around a bundle of kindling and light it to start a camp fire.

         In the Garden

Use floss to gently tie tomatoes or other climbing vines to supports or trellises.

         Quiet a Dripping Faucet

If the midnight drip-drip-drip of a faucet is making you crazy, tie one end of floss to the spout and let the other end reach the drain. Instead of dripping, the water will now slide silently down the floss.

Secrets for a Superstar Smile

For movie stars on the red carpet, a perfect smile is as essential as the perfect outfit. While the limos, ball gowns, and adoring fans may be the territory of A-listers, you can have movie star teeth too! Here are some tricks of the trade that you can use to get that superstar smile:

         Sip Through Straws

Beverages such as coffee, tea, and red wine tend to stain teeth. Your best defense is to use a straw to reduce the amount of liquid that comes into contact with your teeth.

         Slick moves

Can’t bring yourself to use a straw while sipping red wine at a cocktail party? Here’s a trick that celebrities use. Spread a very thin film of petroleum jelly over your teeth to protect them from stains. It also allows for extended smile time since your lips won’t stick to your teeth.

         The right shade of lipstick

To bring out the whitest shade of your smile, choose red lip colors with blue undertones. Avoid orange and yellow undertones, which will accentuate yellow teeth.

         Whiten

If you’ve brushed, flossed and whitened at home but still can’t get a dazzling movie star smile, then it’s time to bring in the experts. Consult your dental professional for whitening treatments that can get you a dramatically whiter smile in just one treatment. These specialized treatments are more powerful than the over-the-counter whitening products available in stores.

         Straighten

Straightening your smile no longer requires years of wearing metal on your teeth. There are a variety of “invisible” straightening options, which allow you to have a straighter, more beautiful smile in just a matter of months.

         Porcelain veneers

Veneers offer a beautiful solution for teeth that are damaged or discolored and can’t be corrected with crowns or whitening treatments. These ultra-thin, tooth-colored coverings are custom made and bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They give the appearance of beautifully shaped, white, natural teeth and will last for years with proper dental care.

Most people have heard of the 4 C’s of diamond quality: cut, color, clarity and carat. But did you know there are 4 C’s to consider when purchasing dental insurance?

         COVERAGE

It is important to consider your family’s dental needs when reviewing the actual coverage provided by your dental insurance plan. Some families may determine that they need minimal services, while others want extensive coverage. Be sure to obtain clear answers to these questions:

Does the plan cover diagnostic, preventive, and emergency services?

What routine treatment is covered by the plan?

           is covered by the plan?

What are the plan’s limitations and exclusions?

Who is eligible for coverage under the plan and when does coverage go into effect?

         CHOICE

Many people want flexibility and control in selecting dental health care providers, procedures and medications. Find out who will make key decisions under your plan.

Does the plan let you choose your own dentist or are you restricted to dentists selected by the insurance company?

Who controls treatment decisions – you and your dentist or the dental plan? Some plans may require dentists to follow the “least expensive alternative treatment approach.”

Does the plan allow referrals to dental specialists?

         CLAIMS

Managing dental insurance claims is perhaps the most confusing and frustrating aspect of receiving dental care. Many dental practices have eliminated on-site processing of dental claims, instead requiring patients to pay for care up front and then pursue the claim individually. It is important to find out the claims submission guidelines for your insurance plan.

           Can claims be filed electronically?

           What documentation is required?

How quickly will the claim be processed and paid?

           How are disputes handled?

At Town & Country Dental, we accept an extensive list of insurance carriers and our experienced staff will process the claims. If you have any questions regarding how we work with your dental insurance plan, please call our office for assistance.

The holiday season is full of special treats but all the celebrations and activities can take a toll on your dental health. Here are some holiday dental tips to ensure that you ring in the New Year with healthy teeth:

Don’t use your teeth to tear open packages, cut strings or crack nuts! Children, in particular, are tempted to use their teeth as tools. Provide scissors, nutcrackers or bottle-openers to avoid chips and cracks.

Although it is supposed to be a season of joy, many people find themselves stressed out during the holidays. Family obligations, additional expenses and work deadlines can all contribute to anxiety, which can result in nighttime grinding and clenching. If you have a night guard, don’t forget to use it.

Halloween Candy Culprits

It’s time for costumes, parties, and candy! Every child looks forward to this evening of festivities, crowned by a bag of treats for their efforts. While families should enjoy and indulge on Halloween, you can avoid dental disaster by knowing the most frightening candy culprits and how to reduce the damage.

         Scary

Hard candies like lollipops stay in the mouth and bathe teeth in sugar, providing the perfect environment for decay to start. Encourage your child to eat the candy in a set period of time then rinse and brush their teeth afterward.

         Scarier

Sticky, chewy candy such as gummies, caramel, or taffy, cause trouble for longer because they adhere to the tooth, setting up shop for cavity production. These sweets can lodge in the crevices between the teeth and are difficult to wash away. Sticky candy can even pull out fillings and dislodge braces. After any gooey treat, be sure to brush, floss, and check carefully for any leftover candy culprits.

         Scariest

Sour candies with a mouth puckering punch contain high levels of acidity that can erode enamel. Rinse the mouth with water to stop the erosion and allow saliva to naturally balance the acid in the mouth. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing or you may actually increase erosion by spreading the acid around already weakened enamel.

Halloween festivities should be fun for children of all ages. Work with your family to enjoy some candy, reduce or avoid the worst culprits, and take steps to avoid dental decay.

You can also treat someone else by donating your excess Halloween candy! Town & Country Dental is accepting donations of Halloween candy and for West Houston Area Ministries (WHAM) Food Bank.

Using FSA Dollars for Dental Care

If you have an FSA (Flexible Spending Account) through your employer, then you must spend any remaining money in the account by December 31 or risk losing it! Taking care of your family’s dental health is an excellent way to utilize the remaining money in your FSA and maximize the benefits of your insurance policy. Here are some important things to consider when planning how to use your FSA dollars for dental care:

         Deductibles and Maximum Dollars

Many dental plans have deductibles that must be met, as well as an annual maximum dollar amount that the plan will pay during the benefit period (usually January through December). If you have satisfied the deductible, but have not reached the maximum benefit amount, these unused benefits do not roll over. You could lose out on hundreds of dollars of services!

         Determine what your family needs

            Dental sealants –

Children should get sealants on their permanent molars before decay has a chance to attack. If your child has untreated molars, this is the perfect opportunity to make sure they are protected.

            Additional Cleanings –

Most patients have their teeth cleaned twice a year. However, some patients, such as those with braces, may benefit from an extra cleaning.

            Unfinished Dental Work –

If you have put off replacing a dental crown or other procedure, now is an ideal time to have it completed.

            Dental Implants / Dentures –

Many dental insurance plans only pay for part of these procedures and leave the patient with a significant uncovered expense. If you have money left in your FSA, it can help cover your out-of-pocket cost.

            Nightguard, or Occlusal Guard –

Excessive grinding and nighttime clenching can cause numerous dental and health problems. If nightguards are not covered by your plan, you can use your FSA money to help pay for this dental appliance.

Beat the year-end rush and schedule your appointment as soon as possible. Town & Country Dental works with many insurance carriers and our well-informed staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Five Dental Tips to Keep Your Teeth Merry during the Holiday Season

The holidays are some of the few times in the year where we can feast, indulge, and not feel guilty about it. Although eating lots of great food comes along with the festivities, we should all remember to take care of our teeth.

Here are five tips to keep in mind to help prevent cavities:

            Feast –

That’s right. Keep in mind that saliva is produced when you eat food. Saliva is beneficial because it helps neutralize harmful acids before they can attack teeth.

            Avoid frequent snacking –

There’s enough food for everybody! Take breaks from eating so that your saliva can neutralize acid and repair tooth enamel.

            Use a straw –

Steer the acids in your drink away from direct contact with your teeth. This minimizes any damage from the acidity, as well as any staining that may occur.

Rinse your mouth with water –

Try taking 15 to 20 seconds to cleanse your teeth after eating something acidic. Doing this simple trick stops the acid from attacking your teeth and also encourages the production of saliva.

            Chew sugar-free gum –

Similar to the previous tip, chewing gum increases the production of saliva. Sharing gum at parties is also a great way to break the ice.

While keeping these tips in mind, do not forget to have fun. In addition, do not forget to brush your teeth at the end of the night. It is crucial to stay on top of your usual hygiene, even if it is the holidays.

            C

hew, rinse, brush, and be merry! Happy Holidays, everybody!
