The holiday season is full of special treats but all the celebrations and activities can take a toll on your dental health. Here are some holiday dental tips to ensure that you ring in the New Year with healthy teeth:

Teeth are not tools – Don’t use your teeth to tear open packages, cut strings or crack nuts!  Children, in particular, are tempted to use their teeth as tools. Provide scissors, nutcrackers or bottle-openers to avoid chips and cracks.

Manage holiday stress – Although it is supposed to be a season of joy, many people find themselves stressed out during the holidays. Family obligations, additional expenses and work deadlines can all contribute to anxiety, which can result in nighttime grinding and clenching. If you have a night guard, don’t forget to use it.

Don’t leave home without it – For many families, the holidays mean traveling. Be sure to have your family’s dental supplies close at hand. When you hit the road or fly the skies, pack your family’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and any specialty dental items such as wax or bands for braces, night-guard or retainer.

Have an emergency plan – Make sure you have your dental professional’s number in your phone in the event of a dental emergency. Many medical professionals have holiday hours and it may be difficult to schedule a sudden appointment. Find out if there is an emergency number when the office is closed.

Town & Country Dental wishes you the happiest and healthiest of holiday seasons and wishes you a Happy New Year!
